Gryphons withstand early pressure & defeat Laurier 18-7

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphon men's lacrosse team improved their record to 3-1 on Sunday afternoon with a lop-sided 18-7 win over Laurier in Waterloo.

The Gryphons won the opening face off and dominated the first five minutes of the game. Unable to score, Guelph turned the ball over and Laurier turned a fast break into the first goal of the game. Midway through the quarter, the Gryphons were down 3-0.

"The guys just weren't ready to play," said University of Guelph head men's lacrosse coach, Sam Kosakowski following the game. "But when we finally came to play, the game changed dramatically."

Guelph scored four unanswered goals in the second part of the first quarter and never looked back.

In the second quarter, the Gryphons completely shut down Laurier's offence, allowing just one shot on goal.   The offence scored six goals on seven shots, blowing the game wide open. At half, Guelph lead 10-3.

The entire Gryphon bench saw the field against Laurier as the team cruised to their third win of the season.

Eric Hubert (Mississauga, ON) led all Gryphons in scoring with two goals and four assists. Mike Teeter (Orangeville, ON) recorded four goals and one assist while Jordan Costa (Mississauga, ON) had three and one. Ryan Serville (Pickering, ON) added three goals and Nick Smith (Mississauga, ON) had a goal and two assists. Taylor Brown (Peterborough, ON) picked up two goals on attack while Paul Forester (Toronto, ON), and Joe Wasson (Peterborough, ON) each had one. Jordan Critch (Oreangville, ON) had an assist.

Next up for the lacrosse Gryphons will be Western. The Gryphon lost a close 9-8 battle to Western earlier in the season and will look to even the score at home on Friday, September 30 at 7pm. Then, on Saturday, October 1, Guelph will be home to McMaster at 7pm.
