The Guelph Gryphon's (4-6) baseball team dropped an 9-6 decision in extra innings to the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks (8-2) at Hastings Stadium in Guelph Thursday night in a game that took 15 innings and more than 4 hours to decide.
Laurier starter Adam McBride (Toronto, ON) got into trouble in the bottom of the second after giving up a lead-off double by Gryphon centre fielder Josh Kennedy (Guelph, ON). McBride then proceeded to walk 3 of the next 4 batters allowing Guelph to score twice putting the home team up 2-0. The Gryphon offence surged again in the 5
th inning with a lead–off single by Wes Romak (London, ON) that was followed by an absolute monster-shot of a homerun by Guelph native Justin Interisano. After an error filled 6
th inning for the Gryphon defense put Laurier on the board, Guelph responded with a run of their own in the bottom half, fueled by a line drive to left field by Guelph third basemen Sean Malony (Pickering, ON).
The Gryphons went into the top of 7
th inning up 5-1 but Laurier promptly scored two of their own after three consecutive base hits by first basemen Tino Silvestri (Waterloo, ON), right fielder James Bruce (Waterloo, ON), and second basemen Trevor Nyp (Kitchener, ON). The Laurier offence picked up in the 8th where it left off after a scoreless bottom half for the home team, going on to score three times on only one hit to go up 6-5. Guelph managed to tie the game in the bottom of the 8
th after singles by short-stop Steve Fleischer (Brampton, ON) and third baseman Sean Malony (Pickering, ON) and an eventual RBI walk by Gryphon centre fielder Josh Kennedy (Guelph, ON).
The game remained tied in a back and forth pitching duel between Gryphon rookie pitchers Matt Hill (Caledonia, ON) and Lenny Wood (Stouffville, ON) and Laurier's Wes Van Luven in a scoreless 9 through 14. Laurier centre fielder Darnell Duckett (Waterloo, ON) finally broke the game open in the top half the 15
