Gryphons battle to 1-1 with Varsity Blues in Sunday doubleheader


The Gryphons traveled to Toronto on Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader against the Varsity Blues. The Gryphons defeated Toronto in the first game by a score of 9-3 and then dropped a 3-2 final.  The Gryphons move to a regular season record of 4-5 and sit fifth in the OUA standings.

In game one the Gryphons got off to a great start in the day and took the Varsity Blues by a score of 9-3. Guelph used two four-run innings in the third and sixth to take the home team.

Leading the Gryphons on the mound was starting pitcher Brian Coatswork who earned the win as he only gave up a single run off six hits in six innings pitched with three strikeouts. Jordan Cleveland was his reliever for a single inning, and conceded two runs off four hits.  Toronto's Ryan Donnelly struck out seven in five innings in the loss.

Wes Romak and Kevin Winters both hit a triple and single to lead the Gryphons on the plate. 

In the second game of the day the Varsity Blues rebounded to defeat the Gryphons by a narrow 3-2 final. Down 2-1 heading into the sixth the Blues drove in two runs to solidify the come from behind victory.

Guelph's Dan McMullin pitched the entire game giving up three runs off ten hits in six innings. Toronto's Marek Deska pitched the complete game, striking out three, allowing only two hits in the win.  Justin Interisano and Sean Molony were the only Gryphons with hits in the outing.

Up next the Gryphons will play the Laurier Golden Hawks at home at Hastings Field at 7:00 p.m.  This is a rescheduled game after a rain-out that took place on September 14th.
