The Guelph Gryphons competed in the OUA Kickoff Tournament on Saturday (Sept. 10). The Laurier Golden Hawks hosted the tournament in Guelph on the weekend. The Gryphons opened the tournament on Saturday with a 1-1 record.
The Gryphons opened the tournament with a 17-12 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday. The Gryphons were wining 16-0 after four innings, including an 11-0 second inning, before the Badgers rallied to score 12 runs over the next three innings. Guelph would add another run in the sixth inning to secure the victory.
In his season debut, third-year
Lucas Borges earned the win, allowing nine runs on six hits with three strikeouts over five innings of work.
The Gryphons had four players with multiple hit performances, led by
Wesley Romak who went 4-for-5 with a double, homerun and six RBI's.
Anthony Interisano (3-for-5, homerun, 3 RBI),
Sean Molony (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and
Steven Fleischer (3-for-3, double, 1 RBI) all chipped in with three hits each in the victory.

The bats weren't as strong in the Gryphons second game on Saturday as Guelph fell 7-2 to the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Varsity Blues took an early 2-0 lead but the Gryphons came back with single runs in both the third and fourth innings. Toronto responded in a big way with five unanswered runs in the top of the fifth to seal the victory.
Leonard Wood took the loss allowing seven runs on five hits with two strikeouts over five innings.
Craig Howse led the Gryphons with an RBI on two hits, while
Peter Ricciardi earned an RBI on one hit in the loss.
In the win, Varsity Blues pitcher Tyler Wilson pitched a complete game in the wins. Brent Page and Kyle Bowers led Toronto with three RBI on two hits in the victory.
