GeeGee's Big Fourth Quarter Sinks Gryphons 68-58

Ottawa's Hannah Sunley-Paisle showed the Guelph Gryphons the kind of dominance she can have in a game, erupting for 30 points and 14 rebounds to lead the GeeGee's to a come-from-behind victory Saturday night at the W.F. Mitchell Centre.

With the victory, Ottawa improves to 4-2 while the Gryphons fall to 2-4 on the season.

Along with Sunley-Paisle, Kellie Ring added nine points and four assist for Ottawa, with Teddi Firmi chipping in eight. As a teal, the GeeGee's shot 36.7% from the free-throw line, and dominate the boards, outrebounding Guelph 47-24.

Leading the Gryphon's in scoring were Jasmine Douglas and Marlee Freeman, each scoring 13 points. Douglas also collected nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in a fine defensive showing. Freeman led the Gryphons with three assists and played some of her best ball of the season.

The GeeGees stormed out to an early lead behind Sunley-Paisle, who netted eight points in the opening quarter. The Gryphon bench came up big, with Kayla Goodhoofd and Barbara Inrig-Piete scoring nine points between them to cut Ottawa's 14-6 lead to just 14-13 at the break. Both teams played tough defence, setting a physical tone early on.

The second quarter saw both teams trade baskets, before Ottawa went on a 10-5 run to take a 30-25 lead behind a Jenna Gilbert three. Douglas used an emphatic block to electrify the crowd, and Freeman's driving layup as time expired cut the GeeGee lead to just 32-29 at the half. Sunley-Paisle had 12 points in the quarter, giving her 20 to go with eight rebounds by halftime.

Freeman and Douglas continued to lead the Gryphon's in the fourth, with both playing exceptional defence and forcing GeeGee turnovers. Freeman had five points in the quarter, including a big three to give Guelph their first lead, and the Gryphon's took a 46-43 lead into the fourth.

The fourth quarter saw Sunley-Paisle's post up jumper tie the game at 49-49, and after that the Ottawa defence turned up the pressure. Ottawa then went on a 10-0 run, with Paisle-Sunley continuing to dominate down low. Guelph was unable to close after that, and fell for the third straight game.

Guelph will look to rebound after another tough loss when they take on the Laurentian Voyaguers Friday, December 2 in Sudbury, Ontario. Tipoff is scheduled for 6pm.
