Gryphons wrap up regular season with convincing win over Laurentian

The Gryphon men's lacrosse team wrapped up their regular season with a convincing 18-7 win on the road against Laurentian on Sunday (Oct. 23).

By virtue of the win, and a Brock loss to Western on the weekend, the Gryphons secured first place in their division and will now host Laurentian on October 29 at 1pm in the first round of the playoffs.

The Gryphons were led by their top point getter, Eric Hubert (Mississauga, ON) who had 5 goals and 2 assists.  Hubert finishes the season with 33 goals and 19 assists, enough to take the 2011 Canadian University Field Lacrosse scoring title.   Hubert is the first Gryphon to do so in the team's history.

Other scoring highlights for Guelph included 3 consecutive goals from defensive long poles, Ben Vangalen (Orangeville, ON), Jeff Sehl (Caledon East, ON) and Spencer Fraser-Steinbach (Guelph, ON).   The goals represent the first in their careers as Gryphons for Sehl and Fraser-Steinbach.  Also scoring his first goal in a Gryphon uniform was Mike Clarke (Hamilton, ON) who turned his defender inside out and froze the Laurentian goalie with a rip to the top corner.

Both Taylor Brown (Peterborough, ON) and Braden Gallant (Burlington, ON) had a great day on attack for Guelph.  Brown had 4 goals and an assist and Gallant recorded 2 and 3.  Rusty Poulton (Toronto, ON) had 2 goals and 1 assist and Connor Deuchars had a great power play rip from 15 yards to round out the Gryphon scoring.

The first place finish puts Guelph in good position for a playoff run.  Should the team get by Laurentian on the 29th, they will be the highest seed from the West division and will get a bye to the semi-finals on Saturday, November 5.

The Baggataway Cup will take place from November 4-6 in London at the London City Wide Fields and TD Waterhouse Stadium.
