Led by a five-point performance from
Ryan Serville (Pickering, Ont.) the Gryphon men's lacrosse team defeated the McMaster Marauders 16-6 tonight in Guelph. The Gryphons advance to 5-1 on the season.
If ever the men's lacrosse team needed motivation against an opponent, they didn't have to dig too deep to find it against McMaster on Saturday night. McMaster has shown the Gryphons an early exit to the playoffs in each of the past two years. On Saturday night, it was time for a little pay back.
Fourteen Gryphons found their way on to the score sheet on Saturday night, including assists from long stick defensemen
Colin Skyvington (Mississauga, ON) and
Benjamin Vangalen(Orangeville, ON). Vangalen had another fantastic night taking draws, wining over 50% of his face offs.
"The guys were fired up and ready to play," said Gryphon head coach Sam Kosakowski. "We had a great week of prep, a great win against Western, and we had something to prove against Mac."
With another slow start, they traded goals with McMaster in the first quarter and were tied 3-3 going into the second. Then, the Gryphon defense led by goaltender
Benjamin Vangalen, who stopped 13-of-19 shots on the night, completely stifled the McMaster offence shutting them out for two quarters of play. Rookie long stick defensemen
Nicholas Vangalen blanketed McMaster's big offensive threat Carter Williams, holding him to one point. Veteran long stick
Jeffrey Sehl played great positional defense and held his check, Matt Garrison off the score sheet.
Meanwhile, Guelph's offence scored 11 unanswered goals from the second to fourth quarters blowing the game wide open. Apart from the usual suspects,
Taylor Brown (Peterborough, ON) netted two goals and an assist and
Jordan Costa (Mississauga, ON) took a great feed from
Braden Gallant (Burlington, ON) and ripped out a top corner to add another.
Other point getters for Guelph were
Eric Hubert (Mississauga, ON),
Russell Poulton (Toronto, ON) and
Braden Gallant with 2 goals and an assist each, while
Curtis Knight (Oshawa, ON),
Joel McQuigge(Peterborough, ON)
Garrett Williams (Oshawa, ON) and Mr. Coast-to-Coast
Ryan O'Sullivaneach added one.
Jordan Critch (Orangville, ON) and
Jordan Daradick (Welland, ON) had two helpers each.
Guelph will put their 5-1 record on the line next Friday night at home against Laurier. Game time is 7pm
