The Gryphon Women's Lacrosse team ended their regular season play with a 1-1 split.
In the opening game of the weekend the Gryphon woman defeated the McMaster Marauders with a final score of 12-6. With the Marauders scoring first the Gryphons quickly answered with five straight goals of their own. Solid defence and midfield play by the Gryphons held the Marauders to only two goals in the first. Determined to clinch hold on to their second place spot, the Gryphon Women dominated the second half with good ball possession and an effective offense. Defensive player Katie Smith (Peterborough, ON) was a stand out team member throughout the game not only in creating and capitalizing on turnovers but also scoring one of her own. Teamwork and communication led the Gryphons to their ninth win of the season finishing with a 12 - 6 final score.
Leading the offence in goals was Captain, Stacey Pogue (Peterborough, ON) with four goals. Dana Skyvington (Mississauga, ON) and Jade Sullivan (Ennismore, ON) had two while Alyssa Nevills (Orangeville, ON), Breanne Gillie (Dundas, ON), Katelyn Cartwright (Orangeville, ON) and Smith each delivered one. Gillie also contributed three assists, with Cartwright and Nevills each assisting with one.
The last game of regular season played saw the Gryphons drop a 10-6 game to the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Hawks dominated the midfield and quickly took the lead and never looked back. Ending the half frustrated, yet determined to come back and finish strong, the Gryphons adjusted their play and started seeing mesh. Alyssa Nevills and Katie Smith were key in causing turnovers and holding the midfield play. Nevills also contributed two goals in the second half while Jade Sullivan had two also; Captain, Dana Skyvington tallied a single. The lone first half goal was scored by second year player, Julie Bryan (Keene, ON).
The Gryphons finish the season with an 8-3-1 record, good for second place going into the OUA Championships. The Gryphons will face UOIT in their first game of the playoffs on home turf this coming weekend. Stayed tuned to gryphons.ca for full schedule information.
