Gryphons win three straight on the weekend

The Guelph Gryphon men's lacrosse team wrapped up the second weekend of their season on Sunday (Sept. 19), with a 16-4 victory over Laurentian in Guelph.  The Gryphons won three straight this weekend and move to 4-0 on the season.

Coming off a big win the night before against Brock, the Gryphons started slowly.  It wasn't long however, until Guelph's offense kicked into gear and started to find the net.   Jordan Critch (Orangeville, ON) opened the scoring for Guelph.  Along the way, rookie midfielder Andrew McDermott (Port Sydney, ON) scored his first as a Gryphon.

Defensively, Guelph was dominant.  Rookie goaltender Connor Danko (Pelham, ON) got his first start for the Gryphons.  Right from the start, he received solid support from longstick defenders Colin Skyvington (Mississauga, ON), Jeff Sehl (Caledon, ON) and Kyle Andrews (Georgetown, ON).   Danko faced 18 shots on the day, stopping 14.

Despite Guelph's success this weekend, the team still struggles to remain disciplined.  Against Laurentian, the Gryphons took 12 minutes in penalties and totaled over 30 minutes in their 3 games on the weekend.

"We played very well as a team in all three games this weekend", said head coach Sam Kosakowski. "But we need to clean up a few parts of our game.  As the season continues our goal is to limit the number of power play chances we give our opponents".

Justin Wilson-Kirby of Burlington, Ontario had another great outing, scoring times for Guelph while Mike Teeter (Orangeville, ON) had 3.  Adding singles were Critch, McDermott, Curtis Knight (Oshawa, ON), Connor Deuchars (Toronto, ON), Ryan O'Sullivan (Newmarket, ON), Paul Forster (Toronto, ON), Jordan Costa (Mississauga, ON) and longstick middie Kyle Andrews (Georgetown, ON).

The Gryphons will next take the field Thursday night in an exhibition game against the Hill Academy from Orangeville.  League play for Guelph will continue on Wednesday, Sept. 29 as the team travels to McMaster.  Game time is 8:30 pm.
