Nov. 12: Guelph 69 – Queens 59
GUELPH - Ali Dzikowski and the Guelph Gryphons couldn't have asked for a better home opener. The Gryphons led from start to finish on route to a 69-59 defeat of the Queen's Gaels Friday night.
Dzikowski (Brantford, Ont.) led the way with 21 points, going 5-10 from three-point range. Dzikowski hit her first three three-point attempts, as well as nailing another from half at the buzzer to end the third.
Samantha Russell (Paradise Valley, AZ) added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jasmine Douglas (Guelph), last year's leading scorer, netted 13 to go with her game high six blocks.
Queen's was led by Brittany Moore's (Hannon) 20 points, while Meaghan MacDougall (Martintown) chipped in with 11.
The Gryphon's showed a newfound hunger after last year's disappointing season. Defence seemed to be their main priority, as they held Queen's to 27% shooting for the game. Guelph's noticeable size advantage forced the Queen's players to take tough shots. The Gryphon's on the other hand connected on 40% of their shots.
Newcomer Chelsea Kane (Ingersoll, Ont.) showed great command of the Gryphon offence, earning seven assists on the night. The Gryphon's ball movement caused the Queen's players fits all night.
The Gryphon's will look to make it two in a row as they host the visiting RMC squad Saturday afternoon at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. Tipoff is scheduled for 1pm.
