MEN’S SOCCER – MacMillan flips to ensure winning goal against Western Mustangs, 1-0

The Gryphons had an amazing 1-0 win after a mind-blowing play by Colin MacMillan (Newmarket, Ont.) on Sept 20 against the Western Mustangs, at Alumni Stadium in Guelph.

The Gryphon record moves to 3-0-1 while the Mustangs are 1-2-1

The only goal of the game came from Guelph's own Colin MacMillan who only ten minutes into the first half landed a goal that ended up taking him out of the rest of the game due to an injury. Western desperately fought for a goal but was unable to break Guelph's steadfast defence.

From the very beginning of the first half it was clear that both teams were fighting hard for a win. Guelph took the lead when MacMillan drove the ball towards the posts and shot towards the net, while at the same time colliding with Mustang goal-keep Andrew Murdoch (Burlington, Ont.). The collision threw him into a front flip and he regained balance just in time to see the ball go into the net, giving Guelph the advantage. MacMillan sat out for the rest of the game due to an apparent injury incurred during the collision.

Western responded with aggressive defence, especially Ben Ragan (Rockwood, Ont.) who continually pushed Guelph players out of his end. Mustang player Camilo Gonzales was a powerhouse throughout the game, making Guelph players nervous whenever he gained control of the ball. With this return of energy from Western, several attempts on Gryphon net were pursued in the first half, although none successful.

The second half was extremely suspenseful, with Gryphons trying to keep their lead and Western trying to break it. Team captain Frankie Luzi (Guelph, Ont.), carried the Gryphon's in MacMillan's absence and made several amazing plays in hope of a second goal.

Only minutes into the second half Luzi made an astounding shot just short of the 18 yarder, but it was deflected by the cross-bar. Adam Jovanovic (Kitchener, Ont.) made two consecutive saves in the 14th minute of the second half, after Western offence pummeled through Guelph's defence. Fans could feel the desperation coming from Western as they continuously tried to tie up the game, but they were never able to capitalize. Gryphons won 1-0, keeping their record clean of any losses.

Guelph plays next on Sept 26 at the University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont. where they will be facing off with the Laurier Golden Hawks. The game will begin at 3:15pm.
