Steve Szymanski

The 2024-25 season marks Steve Szymanski’s 10th season as a coach with the University of Guelph men’s and women’s varsity curling teams.

During the 2019-20 season, Steve led the Gryphons men’s curling team to a bronze medal at the 2020 OUA Curling Championships on home ice, held at the Guelph Curling Club. The 3rd-place finish by the Gryphons men’s team meant they had earned a trip to nationals, where they would go on to earn a 4th-place finish at the 2020 U SPORTS / Curling Canada Curling Championship in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

Prior to being named head coach of the U of G men’s curling team, Coach Szymanski spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Gryphons, beginning in the 2015-16 season where he helped guide the U of G women’s team to a pair of bronze medal finishes at both the provincial and national levels. It marked the first time in program history the Gryphon women had reached the podium at the national level.

Steve is an NCCP certified competition coach and is currently working towards the completion of his Competition Development coach certification. Prior to joining the Gryphon curling program, Steve coached youth teams at the U18 and U21 levels from 2000-2015. Prior to coaching, Steve’s competitive curling career saw him compete on the Ontario Curling Tour, while also taking part in Ontario Curling’s provincial playdowns and qualifiers. In all, Steve Szymanski has been active in the sport of curling for over 30 years.
