GUNNER OBRASCOVS TRAINER OF THE YEAR

2024-25 Gunner Obrascovs Trainer of the Year: Kyla Hrycusko (Wrestling)

Kyla is a graduating Human Kinetics student who has been an integral member of the Gryphon's varsity wrestling team for the last 2 years which includes working at two U SPORTS Championships. She is a dedicated, valued and outstanding contributor to the wrestling program always offering additional support to team athletes and coaches alike. Kyla is a reliable, consistent leader who has strengthened the Gryphons Student Trainer program with her time, character and ability.

Kyla completed a new role this past year as a Varsity Return to Play Coordinator under a work study initiative with the Strength & Conditioning and Athletic Therapy Departments. In this new position, Kyla demonstrated a great ability to increase her student trainer capacity by applying her skill, support and assistance to athletes from all varsity teams in addition to her responsibilities with Gryphon wrestling.

Olivia has been an absolute asset to the football program, working tremendously hard to support the athletes with taping, injury management, assessment and rehab. She has become a leader in the clinic and the athlete gravitate towards her to help get them back on the field. She is a true testament to what the ‘Gunner Obrascovs Trainer of the Year’ award stands for and a truly deserving recipient.

2022-23 Gunner Obrascovs Trainer of the Year:  Jasmine Fox (Men's Volleyball)

Throughout the past three men's volleyball seasons, Jasmine has established herself as one of the top student-trainers in all of Gryphon Athletics thanks to her exceptional dedication and compassion towards the student-athletes. Jasmine often goes above and beyond to ensure athletes receive the best care possible both on and off the court. Despite dealing with several injuries this past season, Jasmine's standard never wavered, she spent many hours with athletes taking them to appointments or to see specialists while also ensuring staff were up do date on the progression of treatment.
 

2021-22 Gunner Obrascovs Trainer of the Year:  Alyssa Morris (Women's Soccer)

Alyssa Morris is completing her second year as a student trainer. She has shown tremendous dedication and support for all varsity athletes that she has worked with.Alyssa Morris Trainer of the Year Award

Her growth as a senior leader is evident in her taping skills, sideline assessment skills and first aid management of injury. She has also mentored younger student trainers and has always been available to help with taping assessments.

Through all her hard work and dedication, she has been accepted into the athletic therapy program at Sheridan college this upcoming fall.

We fully anticipate to see her again as part of her 4th year placement at Sheridan college, returning home to UofG to work and support our Gryphon varsity athletes.

2019-20 Gunner Obrascovs Trainer of the Year:  Rileigh Arsenault (Women's Hockey)

Throughout the 2019-20 women’s hockey season, Rileigh established herself as one of the top student-trainers in all of Gryphon athletics, thanks to her exceptional leadership skills and tremendous compassion towards the student-athletes.
 
Rileigh took the initiative to form an injury tracking spreadsheet for the Gryphons women's hockey team and communicated this daily as needed with both coaches and athletic therapy staff. Her communication regarding injury updates was second-to-none, while her care for the student-athletes was evident daily.

Deanna and Rebecca have been exemplary additions to the Gryphon women’s soccer staff. The two student trainers have worked closely together, striving to achieve a united and collaborative approach to their positions. And their roles extend far beyond the length of the OUA season as both Deanna and Rebecca are fixtures for early-morning, off-season training sessions in the Fieldhouse, weekend trips for exhibition matches during the winter, and the consistent monitoring of players to ensure the health and well-being of the players even throughout the summer. The duo has met the rigorous demands of the job and never fail to meet the needs of the Gryphon athletes. Deanna and Rebecca are kind, generous, and intelligent members of the staff and they have become part of the fabric of this family-oriented program.

The demands of a trainer often match those of the athletes they care for. Alida serves that important role for both the women’s basketball team and men’s rugby team, displaying passion and pride in preparing Gryphon athletes for game days. She is always the first to arrive and last to leave and is fully committed to her duties before, during, and after competition, and in clinic hours. Alida created an effective reporting system for the rugby team that kept coaches updated, while maintaining privacy for players. She was also responsible for taping, stretching, and massage for the basketball players. Alida has built relationships with her players and has earned respect with her professional approach and genuine concern for athletes.

In her third year as the Gryphons men's soccer student trainer, Jessica's tireless work ethic helped the Gryphons along their journey towards capturing the school's first OUA title in men's soccer in 26 years. Described by both student-athletes as well as Gryphon coaches as a highly dependable and extremely organized individual, Jessica displays an desire to learn and improve that is second-to-none. Jessica was also involved in a pair of projects with the University of Guelph's Health & Performance Centre, where see served as a physiotherapy volunteer and assisted in the varsity athlete screening project as well as the weekly illness tracking project.
