PRESIDENTS TROPHY - WOMEN'S STUDENT-ATHLETE

2024–25 President’s Trophy (Female): Ali Bertrim (Women’s Swimming)

Human kinetics major and swimmer with the Gryphons women’s swim team, Ali Bertrim takes home the President’s Trophy. The Lively, Ontario in her third year with the team was a finalist in all her individual events and winning a bronze medal at OUAs in the women’s 100m fly to go along with a silver medal in the 4x100m medley relay and a bronze in the 4x50m medley relay. Ali at the U SPORTS Championships finished 10th in the country in the women’s 50m fly after placing in 2nd in the ‘B’ finals. Bertrim alongside Alanna Casasanta, Hannah Nordquist and Liz Greaves set a new team record in the 4x100m medley relay at nationals with a time of 4:12.32.

Ali impressed in the pool and was more impressive in the classroom with the human kinetics major earning 94.2% average during the winter ‘24 semester, followed by a 97% average in the fall of ’24.

Bio-medical sciences major and standout forward with the Gryphons women’s basketball team, Trinity Papamandjaris takes home the President’s Trophy as the top overall performer in both academics and athletics.
 
In her final season as a Gryphon, the London, Ontario native was one of the most consistent performers on the women’s basketball team, starting 14 games, finishing 10th in the OUA in offensive rebounds, and scoring a career-high 22 points on February 17 at Laurentian.
 
Trinity was impressive on the court, and even better in the classroom, with the Bio-Medical Science major earning a 97% average during the winter ’23 semester, followed by a 96.5% average in the fall of ’23.

2022-2023 President’s Trophy (Female): MacKeely Shantz (Women's Basketball)

Human kinetics major and standout guard with the Gryphons women's basketball team, MacKeely Shantz takes home the President's Trophy as the top overall performer in both academics and athletics.
 
In her fourth year academically but third year of eligibility, the Plattsville, Ontario native earned OUA First Team All-Star status after another sensational season on the court. Ranking in the OUA's Top 10 in several key statistical categories, MacKeely helped the Gryphons to an OUA playoff berth and opening round win while also earning U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status for a fourth consecutive season.
 

2021-2022 President’s Trophy (Female): Sidney Evans (Field Hockey)

Sidney EvansBio-medical science major Sidney Evans takes home the President’s Trophy after excelling in the classroom as well as on the field for the Gryphons field hockey team.

In her third year academically but second year of eligibility, the Waterloo, Ontario native earned U SPORTS All-Canadian status while helping lead the Gryphons to an OUA silver medal during the 2021 season.
 

2019-2020 President’s Trophy (Female): Alex Curran (Women's Volleyball)

Alex Curran, a fourth-year setter on the Gryphons women’s volleyball team, put together her latest standout season in what has become an already memorable Gryphon career. Alex Curran
 
For a third straight season, the Aurora, Ontario native was named an OUA West 1st-Team All-Star. Registering 630 assists in 2019-20, Curran led the OUA in the category, while finishing fourth in the province in assists per set with 8.75. Using a combination of her tremendous talent, work ethic and experience, Curran has been as dependable as they come taking the second touch and helped lead the Gryphons to an OUA bronze medal, their first podium appearance in nine seasons.

She accomplished all of this while excelling in the classroom, where she earned a 90% average over the fall and winter semesters while majoring in psychology.
 

2018-2019 President’s Trophy (Female): Zoe Sherar (T&F)

Zoe entered a new stratosphere as an athlete this season. The second-year Toronto, ON native swept the OUA and U SPORTS gold medals in the 300m event, establishing a new University of Guelph record in the latter race against the best in the country. 

Zoe’s time of 37.79 seconds was the fifth fastest ever at the national meet and she added to her medal haul with OUA and U SPORTS gold as part of Guelph’s 4x200m relay team. Those groups broke the Canadian senior and U23 records, thanks in part to her incredible splits. Zoe was equally adept in the classroom where she maintained an 85.7 per cent average as an Economics major.

In November of 2019, the economics and geographic information systems major would go on to become just the third U of G student-athlete to be named to the prestigious list of U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadians.
 

2017-2018 President’s Trophy (Female): Sarah Hammond (T&F)

Sarah Hammond's success on the track in 2017-18 was mirrored in the classroom as an Applied Human Nutrition student. She maintained an average of 90.6 percent in the winter semester of 2017 and even improved on that at the start of her historic fourth year with an average of 91.4 per cent in the fall.

Hammond set that high standard despite the grueling year-round preparation required in track and field. In addition to being named the recipient of the President's Trophy, Hammond was also named the University of Guelph's 2017-18 Female Athlete of the Year after helping lead her team to a national title.
 

2016-2017 President’s Trophy (Female): Devon Stober (Rugby)

In her fifth and final year with the Gryphons, Devon Stober helped the women's rugby team to their first OUA title since her rookie campaign in 2012. She capped off her impressive career by earning recognition both as an OUA All-Star and a U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian.

The two-time team captain accomplished all of this while studying animal biology with an average of 91.4.
 

2015-2016 President’s Trophy (Female): Katelyn Ayers (Cross Country, Track & Field)

Katelyn Ayers is a second team All-canadian in both cross country and track. This past season, she was an integral part of Gryphon championship teams that claimed a total of three banners: in 2015-16, she was an OUA champion in both cross country & track, as well as a national champion in cross country.

In the classroom, the Agricultural Science major had an average of 88.2% during the 2015 winter semester. That average would climb even higher to 89.4% during the fall of 2015 semester.
