PRESIDENT'S TROPHY - MEN'S STUDENT-ATHLETE

2024-25 President’s Trophy (Male): Blake Brand (Men’s Volleyball)

In his final season with the Gryphons men’s volleyball team, Blake Brand is this year’s recipient of the President’s Trophy Award. The Sarnia native has proven himself to be the ultimate Swiss army knife for team as an outside hitter or in the libero position. Blake finished the season with 25 kills and 47 digs as a valuable member for the Gryphons with his versatility on the court.

Off the court, Blake shows his value in the classroom. The human kinetics major recorded an average of 95% in the fall 24’ semester.

2023-24 President’s Trophy (Male): Harvey Marchant (Men’s Soccer)
 
In his final season with the Gryphons men’s soccer team, Harvey Marchant takes home the President’s Trophy Award. The native of Fleet, England has established himself as one of the top defenders in OUA men’s soccer, anchoring the team’s back line as a centre back while wearing the captain’s armband for the Gryphons.
 
In the classroom, Harvey is exceptional. The human kinetics major recorded an average of 93.9% in the winter ’23 semester, followed by an average of 95% in the fall ’23 semester. This marks the second time in his Gryphon career in which he has been named the President’s Trophy winner, after also receiving the honour during the 2021-22 season. He becomes just the 5th Gryphons men’s student-athlete all-time to have won the award on multiple occasions, and first in over a decade – with former men’s basketball standout, Dan McCarthy, being the last to do so back in 2012-13.

2022-2023 President’s Trophy (Male): Sam Brown (Baseball)

In his second year with the Gryphon baseball team, Sam Brown takes home the President's Trophy Award following an outstanding sophomore season. The third baseman from Toronto was exceptional in the classroom, where he majors in sport and event management. On the baseball diamond, the 19-year-old was a fixture in the heart of the Gryphon lineup, leading the OUA in several offensive categories.
 
In the postseason, Sam elevated his play even higher. In the regional qualifiers he went 9-for-13 at the plate with 2 Home runs, 14 RBI's, which included a walk-off grand slam to send the team to the conference championship tournament where the U of G team captured bronze.
 

2021-2022 President’s Trophy (Male): Harvey Marchant (Men's Soccer)
   
Harvey Marchant soccerIn his 2nd year academically and 1st year of eligibility, Gryphons men’s soccer midfielder Harvey Marchant takes home the President’s Award for his outstanding performances both academically and athletically during the 2021-22 season.

The native of Fleet, England was exception in the classroom, where he majors in human kinetics.

On the field, the 22-year-old was a key fixture in the midfield for the Gryphons OUA championship-winning squad. Harvey was also named an OUA major award winner in 2021 after being named the recipient of the OUA Community Service Award.
 

2018-2019 President’s Trophy (Male): Mitch Ubene (Men's Cross Country / Track)

Fourth-year standout Mitch Ubene became just the 16th individual in Gryphon history to be named the individual champion at the OUA Men's Cross Country Championships. Mitch UbeneOn October 26, 2019 in Hamilton, Ubene finished 1st in a field of 85 runners to help lead the Gryphons men’s cross country team to their 17th OUA team title in the last 21 years.
 
At nationals, Ubene once again led the way for Guelph, this time finished 2nd overall, to help guide the Gryphons to a U SPORTS bronze medal finish in the team standings.
 
The Tecumseh, Ontario native, who also competed indoors for the Gryphons during the winter semester as a member of the U of G national championship-winning track team, accomplished all of this while obtaining an 85% average while majoring in mechanical engineering.

Ubene was also part of a third straight national title with the Gryphons men's track and field program, with the Gryphons running away from the competition at the U SPORTS Track and Field Championships in Edmonton.

Fifth-year cross country and track athlete Mostafa Elkurdy earned Academic All-Canadian status this season while pursuing his Masters in environmental engineering and competing at the varsity level in both the fall and winter semesters with the Gryphon cross country and track and field teams. The Calgary native served as an integral component of the Gryphon cross country team, scoring in the Top 5 throughout the fall season while helping the Gryphons earn a team silver medal at nationals. Indoors, Mostafa was able to reach the podium at both the OUA and U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, winning silver at both championship meets as a member of the Gryphons 4x800m relay teams.
 

2017-2018 President’s Trophy (Male): Jeremy Seed (Men's Rugby)

Jeremy Seed - 2017-18 President's Trophy winner















Jeremy Seed's role on the powerhouse Gryphons men's rugby team has expanded throughout his four years and the centre had a memorable 2017-18 season on and off the pitch. He has established himself as an important defensive specialist and he was able to get some offensive glory by scoring a pair of tries in 2017. But the Nutraceutical Sciences student is an absolute superstar in the classroom. Seed's commitment to his studies was clear as he maintained an incredible academic average of 95.7 per cent in the 2017 winter semester and 96 per cent in the fall during the heart of the rugby season.

Ethan Danielli: 2016-17 President's Trophy Winner

















Midfielder Ethan Danielli enjoyed a memorable 2016-17 season on the soccer field, being named an OUA West Division Second Team All-Star for a second consecutive season and helping to guide his team to an OUA championship banner and a U SPORTS bronze medal. The assistant team captain also excelled academically with a cumulative average of 86.8% in human kinetics.
 

2015-2016 President’s Trophy (Male Student-Athlete): Charles Sutton (Track & Field)

Charles Sutton enjoyed a memorable season on the track as he set a school record in the 4x200m relay. He was also an OUA second team all-star in that same event.

He also excelled academically with a cumulative average of 89.8% in Biological Sciences during the winter of 2015 semester. In the fall of 2015, that average would creep higher to an even 90%.
