MHKY RECAP: Gryphons Clinch Postseason Spot with 6-1 Win over Lions

TORONTO, Ont. – For the first time since the 2019-20 season, the Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team have qualified for the OUA playoffs after they defeated the York Lions 6-1 on Saturday night (Feb. 7). With the win, the Gryphons move to 15-8-3 on the season and currently occupy the 4th spot in the OUA West Division with 33 points. With the Toronto Varsity Blues loss tonight (Feb. 7) at the Windsor Lancers, 33 points is enough to assure the Gryphons of postseason hockey.

A dominant performance from the Gryphons in the win as they outshot the Lions 47-20. Dillon Stiles opened the scoring for Guelph as he was able to walk in from the blue line and snipe one for his 3rd goal of the season. Justin Barker doubled the lead with under a minute left in the first and Duncan Penman in the second period found the net for the first time this season when his shot trickled through the five-hole. The fifth year defenceman also had two assists to go along with goal in the contest. The Gryphs opened the floodgates in the third period, scoring three times in the period after the Lions scored early in the third to break the shutout. Ethan Doyle continued his goal scoring prowess, scoring twice in the period as he has scored three times in the last two games and Jack Wismer added his 12th goal of the season to move into a tie for the team lead in goals with Nolan Dann. Cal Schell picked up his 5th win of the season, stopping 19 of 20 shots he saw.

This is the first time since 2019-20 season that the Gryphons have qualified for the postseason as it was the same season the Gryphons won the Queen's Cup in triple overtime with now assistant coach Ted Nichol scoring the winner.

The men's hockey team wraps up their regular season with two home games when they host the Western Mustangs on Thursday night (Feb. 12) before the Laurier Golden Hawks come to the Gryphon Centre on Saturday (Feb. 14) in the regular season finale.
