TORONTO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons football team pushed their overall win streak to four with a 46-0 road win on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 3) against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Varsity Blues fall to 0-5.
A dominant day from the Gryphons was sparked early in the opening quarter by the special teams, with second-year receiver
Ethan Garwe taking a punt back 98-yards for the first of six Gryphon touchdowns on the day. The Gryphons led 21-0 after the 1st quarter, and 32-0 at the half, en route to the 46-0 shutout victory. Gryphons fourth-year quarterback
Tristan Aboud finished the day 22-of-32, 311 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. Fourth-year receiver
Willem Arseneau led the way with 7 receptions for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns, while running back
Kanye Nethersole added 98 yards rushing on 16 carries. As a team, the Gryphons racked up 589 yards of total offence, while the U of G defence limited the Varsity Blues to just 184 yards while also recording an interception (
Gianni Green).
The Gryphons (4-2) will now enter their bye week and will be off for Thanksgiving weekend, and will return to action on Saturday, October 17 when they head to Kingston to face the top team in the OUA in the Queen's Gaels. Queen's is currently 5-0 on the season following their 41-30 victory over the Western Mustangs on Saturday. Kickoff between the Gryphons and Gaels on October 17 is set for 1pm at Richardson Stadium.
