WSCR RECAP: Gryphons Advance to OUA Semifinal in 3-0 Shutout Over Mustangs

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team began their postseason on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 24) with a convincing 3-0 victory over the Western Mustangs in OUA quarterfinal action from the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Gryphons are coming off their first undefeated regular season in program history, earning the No. 1 overall seed in the OUA playoffs, and continued to ride that momentum into their first postseason game.

The Gryphons got off to a good start, scoring the game's first goal off a corner. Fifth-year defender Katie Kimens (Maple, ON) used her 6-foot frame to connect on the corner and sent it into the back of the net to give Guelph the 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later, a similar scenario popped up for the Gryphs from the corner kick. Kimens would once again get a piece on the corner as the loose ball fell to Isabella Trepanier right on the goal line and the third-year midfielder tapped it in to double the Gryphon lead. The Gryphons would be in control the rest of the way, outshooting the Mustangs 12-3 and having most of the possession throughout the afternoon. Guelph would put the match away in the 83rd minute when Cassidy Anderson (Vancouver, BC) took the pass from Olivia Stavropoulos and sent it to the top of the net from inside the box to send the Gryphons to the OUA Semifinals in their 3-0 win.

The quarterfinal win for the Gryphons on Saturday afternoon sees them advance to the OUA semifinals for a third consecutive season. Guelph as the No. 1-seed in the OUA West division will host a semifinal match next Saturday (Oct. 31) when they welcome the No. 2-seeded Nipissing Lakers to the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Lakers defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, 3-1, in their quarterfinal matchup on Saturday (Oct. 24). Kickoff for next Saturday's OUA semifinal match is scheduled for 1pm from the Gryphon Soccer Complex. On the other side of the bracket, the York Lions and Brock Badgers will meet in the other quarterfinal with the winner heading to Ottawa to take on the No. 1-seed in the OUA East Gee-Gees who defeated the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks to book their spot in the semifinals.
