TORONTO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team suffered a 4-1 defeat on Friday night in Toronto against the reigning national champion York Lions. After the Lions opened the scoring in the opening 10 minutes of play, the Gryphons would answer back thanks to their fifth-year standout,
Ambrose Tinmouth. The senior from Comox, B.C. would continue his standout 2026 season by chipping York goalkeeper Michael Williams in the 23rd minute to draw the Gryphons level at 1-1. For Tinmouth, it marked his team-leading 7th goal of the season, ranking him 4th in the conference in goals scored. Tinmouth also has 5 assists on the season to go along with his 7 goals, with his 12 points ranking him 2nd in the OUA in points. The Gryphons would come close to taking the lead moments later when second-year forward
Julian Boscariol was able to get behind the York back line, only to see his shot graze the post and stay out. The York Lions, ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest U SPORTS Top 10 polls, would end the opening half with a flurry, with York scoring three times to take a commanding 4-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the 2nd half, the Gryphons would come close to cutting into the lead, with a free kick from
Aidan O'Keeffe curling over the wall and off the cross bar. But that would be as close as the Gryphons would get, with a scoreless second half seeing the Lions take all three points with the 4-1 win.
With the loss on Friday night, the Gryphons fall to 3-4-1 (wins-losses-draws) on the season, while the York Lions remain undefeated and improve to a perfect 9-0-0 on the year. The Gryphons (
5th in the OUA West standings) will now turn their attention to a crucial home game on Sunday (Oct. 4) when they host the Waterloo Warriors (4-3-1, 4th in the OUA West standings). Kickoff at the Gryphon Soccer Complex is set for 3:15pm. The Gryphons have four games remaining in their regular season schedule, with three of those coming at home.
