GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team is playoff-bound, thanks to a 3-1 home win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on the final day of the regular season. Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Gryphons hosted Laurier in a matchup full of playoff implications, with both team's playoff fates hanging in the balance entering the final day. The Gryphons were able to open the scoring in the 40th minute on a goal from
Aidan O'Keeffe, which was followed by a goal right before halftime from standout centre back,
Peter Bandula, who scored for the second straight match after tallying the winner on Friday night (Oct. 16) at Brock. The Golden Hawks were able to trim the deficit to 2-1 with a goal in the 74th minute, but the Gryphons would put the game away for good in the 90th minute with
Aidan O'Keeffe scoring his second of the match to give the Gryphons the 3-1 win.
The Gryphons finish the 12-game regular season with a record of 5-4-3 (wins-losses-draws) and will (unofficially) be the No. 5-seed in the OUA West division. The OUA playoffs will get underway with the opening round on Wednesday night (Oct. 21), which should see the Gryphons traveling to the University of Waterloo to face the Waterloo Warriors (playoff matchups not yet officially confirmed by the OUA, check gryphons.ca for the latest as this story will be updated).
