TORONTO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team saw their 2024-25 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon (March 8) at Varsity Arena after falling to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, 4-0, in Game 2 of their best-of-three OUA semifinal series. After a strong 40 minutes of play from Guelph, U of T opened the third with two goals in :29 seconds to help lead the hosts to a Game 2 victory and a sweep of the series to secure the Varsity Blues a berth in the 2025 McCaw Cup (OUA championship game). Martina Fedel, the Gryphons were unable to solve Toronto goalie Lyla McKinnon, who made 27 saves in the shutout win. The U of G women's team sees their impressive 2024-05 season come to an end, a season in which the Gryphons were ranked No. 4 nationally in the latest U SPORTS polls and earned the OUA's top seed with the best record during the regular season.
The start of the third period would prove to be the turning point in Game 2's matchup between the Gryphons and Varsity Blues. It took just :35 seconds into the third for the opening goal of the game to be scored as Sophie Grawbarger found the top left corner of the net to open the scoring for Varsity Blues. Toronto would add another goal :29 seconds later when Scout Watkins-Southward entered the zone in a one-on-one matchup and was able to get her shot past the blocker side of
Martina Fedel and inside the left post to double the Toronto lead to 2-0. The Gryphons now trailing, pushed to get back into the game but were unable to find a solve Lyla McKinnon in the Toronto goal. Abby Whitworth would put the game away for the Varsity Blues at the 9:14 mark of the period when she scored on the breakaway to give her side the 3-0 lead. The Varsity Blues added an empty netter late to make the score 4-0 en route to winning the best-of-three series 2-games-to-0 and eliminating the Grypohns in the OUA semifinals for a third consecutive season. The Varsity Blues will now travel to Waterloo to face the Waterloo Warriors in a rematch of last year's McCaw Cup, with both teams having also qualified for the 2025 U SPORTS Championships hosted by the Waterloo Warriors in Elmira which takes place March 20-23. Despite the loss in the OUA semifinals, the Gryphons continue show that they are one of the top teams in the province year-in, year-out, with Guelph having made it to the OUA semifinal round of the postseason in 10 of the last 12 seasons.
