WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Sweep Weekend Road Trip to Move Into Top Spot in OUA

GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons women's hockey team were on the road for a pair of road games this weekend against the Western Mustangs on Friday night (Feb. 7) and the Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Feb. 8). The Gryphons won both games as they remain in prime position for the top overall seed in the OUA playoffs.

Friday, Feb. 7, 2025 – Jadyn Calder Scores Lone Goal in Overtime Win
On Friday night in London, the Gryphons were locked in a tight matchup with the Western Mustangs as neither team were to score in regulation sending the game into overtime. In the 3-on-3 overtime period, it was a moment of magic from second-year forward Jadyn Calder that proved to be the difference. Calder started from the behind her own net and weaved through the ice and the Mustang defence before sniping one past Ella Brabrook top shelf for the winning goal. Sophie Helfenstein stopped all 24 shots for her second shutout of the season.

Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025 – Two Katherine Heard Goals Leads Gryphons to Road Win
The Gryphons returned to the ice in Windsor on Saturday afternoon and it didn't take long for them to go out in front. Fourth-year forward Katherine Heard walked in and roofed the game's opening goal 19 seconds into the game. Heard would strike once again 1:19 into the second period as she scored her fifth of the season to give her team a 2-0 lead. Windsor would end the Gryphon shutout streak with a goal in the third period to cut the deficit down to one but the Gryphons would show their resolve to close out the game for the 2-1 win. Martina Fedel made her return to the lineup and was outstanding, turning away 36 of the 37 shots she saw in the win.

The Gryphons record is now at 18-4-2 (wins/losses/overtime losses) with 52 points on the season as they're two points ahead of the Waterloo Warriors (50 points) in a battle for the top spot in the OUA West division and for home ice throughout the postseason with two games remaining in the regular season. Guelph closes out the regular with two road games when they take on the Nipissing Lakers on Friday (Feb. 14) and the York Lions (Feb. 15).
