GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons men's hockey team went on the road for a pair of games in Quebec this weekend against the McGill Redbirds on Friday (Feb. 7) and the UQTR Patriotes (Feb. 8). The Gryphons dropped both games over the weekend as they now face two must win games to stay alive in the playoff race.
Friday, Feb. 7, 2025 – Gryphons Lose High Scoring Affair to McGill
On Friday night, the Gryphons fell behind early as they conceded the opening goal, 39 seconds into the game but were able to draw level 33 seconds later when
Anthony Issaris scored. Goals from
Jacob Winterton and Gio Biondi put the Gryphons ahead 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.
Anthony Tabak opened the third by scoring his 6
th goal of the season to put the Gryphs up by two goals, 45 seconds into the period. However, the lead would evaporate in the period when the Redbirds scored four unanswered goals including twice in 19 seconds to take a 6-4 lead.
Nolan Forster capped off a wild 30 seconds of action when he scored 11 seconds after the two McGill to cut the deficit down to one. Guelph pushed for the tying goal late but were unable to get it as they fell 6-5 in Laval.
Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025 – Gryphons Fall to Reigning Three-Time OUA Champions
On Saturday afternoon, the Gryphons took on UQTR in Trois Rivières as three goals in the second period from the Patriotes allowed the hosts to come away with a 5-1 win. It was a tightly contested matchup for the first half of the game even with the Gryphons trailing by two but two goals from the Patriotes in the final five minutes of the second period saw their lead expand to four.
Nathan Allensen got the Gryphons on the board in the third period when he scored his 5
th goal of the season to make the score 4-1. UQTR added an empty netter to put the game away.
The Gryphons now with a 12-14 record on the season, have two games remaining in their regular season as they need to win both and get some help to qualify for the postseason. The Gryphs will travel to Thorold on Thursday night (Feb. 13) to take on the Brock Badgers before playing host to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night (Feb. 15) in their final regular season game.
