GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons men's basketball team split their weekend games as they weren't able to hold on to a late lead in a tough defeat to the Lakehead Thunderwolves but were able to bounce back and rally from 22 points down for the road win against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Gryphons hosted the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday night in a back-and-forth matchup that came down to the final possession. With the game tied at 70-70 at the midway point of the 4
th quarter, the Gryphs would score the next 10 points to open their largest lead of the game as
Amare Hamilton's three put his side up 80-70 with 3:42 remaining the quarter. The Thunderwolves battled back, scoring the next eight points to trim the deficit down to two. The Gryphs would make three of their four free throws to take an 83-78 lead with a minute left. Lakehead trimmed the lead down to one before taking the 84-83 lead with 16 seconds left as Carson Unrau made both his free throws. Guelph had a chance to win it on the final possession but
Mazen Yagubi's three pointer at the buzzer hit the front iron and bounced out as Lakehead escapes with the win.
Isaiah Odle-Clarke came off the bench and led the team with 22 points on the night, making 4 of 5 from three.
Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025 | Gryphons Pull Away in 3rd Quarter, Erasing a 22 Point 1st Quarter Deficit for 86-68 Win
A quick turnaround for the Gryphons as were at the Goldring Centre to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues the following night. The opening eight minutes of the 1st quarter did not go the way Guelph would of liked as the Varsity Blues jumped out to a 27-5 lead. The Gryphons would chip away at the deficit with strong defensive play and the baskets started to come for the visitors. Guelph would completely erase the 22-point deficit midway through the 3rd quarter when
Eric Armstrong drained a three to give his side the 49-48 lead. With all the momentum on their side, the Gryphons would never look back from that point forward as they pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Blues 25-9 in the third and closed out the quarter on a 19-4 run to see their lead balloon to 65-52 as they would cruise to a 86-68 win in the end.
Mazen Yagubi helped lead the Gryphon surge, scoring a game-high 18 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field.
The Gryphons (4-4) return home to the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre for the last time before the winter break when they host the McMaster Marauders on Wednesday night (Nov. 19) and the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 22).
