WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Open Regular Season with 2-1 Win Over Laurier on “Aggies Night”

GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons women's hockey team got their 2025-26 regular season off to a flying start with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on home ice on Wednesday night (Oct. 8) at the Gryphon Centre Arena. Wednesday night's matchup in Guelph not only marked the regular season opener for both teams, it also served as the 2nd edition of the Gryphons women's hockey team's annual "Aggies Night" game, presented by Syngenta Canada Inc. With over 700 fans in attendance, the Gryphons were able to send the crowd home happy, skating to a 2-1 victory, with Gryphons fourth-year forward Alexie Olivier (Sudbury, ON) scoring the game-winning goal early in the 3rd period. With the game tied 1-1 early in the final period of play, Olivier would show some great speed through the neutral zone, before firing a perfectly placed shot off the post and in to beat Laurier goalie Sarah Howell. From there, the Gryphons would hold off a late push from the Golden Hawks, including a late 6-on-4 advantage for Laurier, with multiple Gryphon players blocking shots in the final moments of the game to secure all three points on the night. Aggies fans in attendance at the women's hockey 2nd annual 'Aggies Night' gameThe other Gryphon goal on the night came on the power play courtesy standout blueliner, Reese Coffey (Thunder Bay, ON), whose point shot in the 2nd period found its way through traffic and tied the game at 1-1. Gryphons goalie Sophie Helfenstein earned the win, turning away 17 of the 18 shots sent her way.

The Gryphons (1-0-0) will be back in action once again on home ice on Friday night (Oct. 10) when they play host to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, with puck drop set for 7:30pm.

What is 'Aggies Night'?

The 'Aggies Night' women's hockey game is a celebration of the Ontario Agricultural College, one of the founding colleges of the University of Guelph. Each year, the Gryphons women's hockey team will dedicate one of their regular season home games to celebrating Canada's largest and most renowned agricultural college, its students and its alumni. The Gryphons wear special 'Aggies' jerseys for each 'Aggies Night' game, in place of the team's usual home Gryphon jerseys.
