MRGBY RECAP: Gryphons Book Spot in OUA Finals with 66-5 Win over Western

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's rugby team are a win away from repeating as OUA Champions for a fifth consecutive time. On Friday night (Oct. 31) from Varsity Field, the four-time defending OUA champions Gryphons were propelled by a fast start, scoring three tries in the opening 13 minutes of the match as it was more than enough for the hosts in their 66-5 defeat the Western Mustangs in semifinal action. It took two minutes for the Gryphons to jump out to an early lead when Daniel Svoboda scored a try. Owen Williams and Kobe Faust would alternate scoring tries as the pair would score the team's next four tries to give Guelph a 33-0 lead at the 41st minute en route to a commanding playoff win. The win sees the men's rugby team earn the right to host the 2025 OUA Championship game as the No. 1-seed, while also booking their spot in the 2025 Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship, which will be held in Montreal, November 12-16.

Seven different Gryphons scored tries against the Mustangs on Friday night, with Kobe Faust leading the team with three tries, followed by a pair of tries Owen Williams. Daniel Svoboda, Alistair Yeomans, Sebastiano De Grandis, Evan Davies and Andrew Ceballos all scored a try in the team's semifinal win.

The Gryphons finished the regular season with an undefeated 6-0 record and received a bye into the OUA Semifinal round as the top seed in the conference. Guelph will host the Queen's Gaels on Thursday night (Nov. 6) following the Gaels 29-22 semifinal victory over the No. 2-seed Laurier Golden Hawks in the other semifinal. This will be the third consecutive year the Gryphons and Gaels will meet at Varsity Field to determine the OUA Champion. The Gryphons men's rugby team has won four straight OUA titles, and will look to hoist the Turner Trophy for a fifth straight time on Thursday night (Nov. 6), with kickoff set for 7pm at the University of Guelph's Varsity Field.
