GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons women's hockey team won their fourth straight game, shutting out the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, 2-0, on Friday night (Jan. 31) from the Gryphon Centre Arena. Guelph improves to 15-4-2 on the season with the win, while Ontario Tech drops to 7-14-0. The Gryphons got off to a great start as they controlled play in the Ridgebacks zone, outshooting the visitors 14-3 in the opening period. It would not be until early in the second period when the Gryphons hard work would get rewarded as first-year forward
Sarah Callaghan found fellow first-year player,
Jessica Teskey,
who scored on the one-timer for her first career OUA goal to put the Gryphons in the lead. The score would remain 1-0 until early in the third period when
Jadyn Calder was able to deflect the Reese Coffey point shot past Ontario Tech's goalie, Ariella Merlino, to double Guelph's lead :26 seconds into the third on the power play. Gryphons first-year goaltender
Alysse Wilkinson made her first career OUA start and was outstanding, turning away all 16 shots for the win and her first career shutout. The Gryphons are back on home ice Saturday night for Senior Night to honour graduating seniors in the Gryphons final regular season home game, when they host the Waterloo Warriors with top spot once again on the line in the OUA West division.
