GUELPH, Ont. – On Friday night (Jan. 17), the No. 9-ranked Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team fell in overtime to the Windsor Lancers 2-1. The Gryphons see their record drop to 11-4-2 (wins-losses-OTL/SOL) as their three game win streak is snapped while the Lancers improve their record to 11-4-3 with the win.
The first goal of the game didn't come until the 7:03 mark the third period when
Jadyn Calder won the faceoff as the puck found
Teghan MacRae and she threw a point shot from the boards by the left faceoff circle and scored as it skipped on the ice and into the net. Windsor would tie it up 1:42 later on the 4-on-4 as they win the faceoff as Teagan Pare scores to ends the shutout bid from
Sophie Helfenstein. Guelph would face trouble at 14:04 in the period when they took two separate penalties on the same play but they were able to avert trouble with an outstanding 5-on-3 penalty kill for a full two minutes as they were able to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Regulation wasn't enough to decide things as the game would go to a seven minute 3-on-3 overtime period. Both teams had their chance to end the game in a tight overtime period but it would be the visitors who would come through. Emily Eikelboom was able to draw the Gryphon defenders on her as she found Maggi DeWolf-Russ who made Helfenstein bite on the shot fake as she backhanded the game winner into the open net to win it for Windsor.
The game was a goaltending duel throughout the night between
Sophie Helfenstein and Cadence Petitclerc. However, it would be the Windsor netminder Cadence Petitclerc coming out on top as she stopped 31 of her 32 shots in the win. Despite the loss,
Sophie Helfenstein was outstanding in the Gryphon net making 30 saves on the night.
The Gryphons return to action tomorrow night (Jan. 18) when they host the Queen's Gaels from the Gryphon Centre Arena with puck drop scheduled for 7:30pm.
