GUELPH, Ont. – The No. 9-ranked Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team started the new year off on a winning note as the Gryphons defeated the Brock Badgers 1-0 on Friday night (Jan. 10) in Guelph. The win marks the 10th of the season for the Gryphons as they improve to 10-4-1 on the season, while the Badgers fall to 5-8-2. The Gryphons got a fantastic performance in net from second-year goalie Sophie Helfenstein, who turned away all 24 shots sent her way for her first shutout of the season and her fourth career OUA shutout. Helfenstein, a molecular biology and genetics major, was the busiest in the final period, stopping all nine shots to lead her team to victory. The lone goal of the game would not come until 1:43 mark third period when Myriam Parnell centered a perfect cross-ice pass to Michelle Gao who fired home the game-winner into an open net to put the hosts in front. The goal was the first in the OUA for the animal biology major from Ottawa as her goal would help the Gryphs come away with their 10th win on the season. The Gryphons and Badgers will finish up a home-and-home on Saturday night in Thorold, Ontario. Puck drop from Canada Games Park is scheduled for 7pm and can be seen on oua.tv.
