GUELPH, Ont. - The Gryphons women's soccer team continued their impressive play in 2024, with the Gryphons picking up a decisive 4-0 home win over the Brock Badgers on Friday night (Sept. 20) at the Gryphons Soccer Complex. A pair of talented first-year Gryphons accounted for the scoring in the opening half, with
Isabella Trepanier (Belle River, ON) opening the scoring in the 21' minute, followed by fellow freshman,
Rebecca Draeger (Waterloo, ON) doubling Guelph's lead just before halftime. For both rookies, it marked the second goals of the season. In the 55' minute, the Gryphons would extend their lead to 3-0 on a goal from fourth-year forward,
Olivia Brown. For Brown, a human kinetics major from Guelph, it marked her 7th goal of the season in just her sixth game of the campaign. Brown currently sits in a tie for 2nd (alongside Cape Breton's Alliyah Rowe) for the most goals scored in all of U SPORTS women's soccer (with only Nipissing's Cassidy Brooks currently having more, with 8 goals scored).
Â
The Gryphons would add one more goal late in regulation, with sophomore midfielder
Olivia Stavropoulos (Kitchener, ON) scoring her second goal in as many games, with the biological science major having scored Guelph's match-winner earlier this week in a 1-0 road win at York on Monday (Sept. 16).
Â
Gryphons second-year goalkeeper,
Sabrina Spano (Maple, ON), picked up her fourth clean sheet in her sixth appearance of the season.
Â
With the win, Guelph improves to 5-1-0 (wins-losses-draws) on the season, and at the midway point of the regular season schedule, sit in 2nd-place in the OUA West Division standings with 15 points (4 points back of the OUA West-leading Western Mustangs). The Brock Badgers, meanwhile, fall to 1-4-1 on the season. The two teams will now play the return leg of the home-and-home matchup on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 22), with the Gryphons set to travel to Brock Alumni Field in St. Catharines for a 1pm kickoff on Sunday.
