WHKY RECAP: Varsity Blues Edge Gryphons in Game 2 of OUA Semifinal Series; Decisive Game 3 Set for Sunday Afternoon in Guelph

TORONTO, Ont. – Friday night (March 1) at Varsity Arena in Toronto, the Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in Game 2 of their best-of-three OUA semifinal series. The Gryphons, who took Game 1 of the series by a score of 1-0 back on Wednesday night, found themselves trailing 2-0 after the host Varsity Blues scored twice in the 2nd period. But the OUA's top-seeded Gryphons would battle back in the final period, with Captain Hannah Tait scoring 2:42 into the 3rd period to make it a 2-1 game. The No. 3-nationally-ranked Gryphons would push for the tying goal over the final 17 minutes of play, but were unable to get another puck past U of T goalie Erica Fryer, who made 19 saves on the night. The Varsity Blues would add an empty-net goal from their Captain, Taylor Trussler, in the final minute of play to cap off a 3-1 win for the No. 8-nationally ranked Varsity Blues to tie the series up at one game apiece.

Gryphons goalie, Martina Fedel, saw her remarkable shutout streak come to an end on Friday night, with Fedel having recorded three straight shutouts to begin the 2024 postseason. But that streak ended early in the 2nd period with a goal from U of T's Taylor Trussler, followed by a short-handed goal from the Varsity Blues from Nikki McDonald.

The series will now shift back to Guelph for a decisive Game 3 on Sunday (March 3), with puck drop at the Gryphon Centre set for 2:30pm. Tickets for the game are available online at gryphons.ca/tickets, with the game broadcast live online at www.oua.tv.
