MBB RECAP: Badgers Use Big 1st Quarter, Beat Gryphons in Low Scoring 2024-25 Season Opener

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – A new season of Gryphons men's basketball officially got underway on Thursday night (Oct. 24) at Brock's Bob Davis Gymnasium in St. Catharines. The Gryphons, fielding one of the younger teams in the conference, played tough defence throughout the night against the Badgers, limiting to Brock to just 37 points over the final three quarters. But a big opening quarter by Brock, in which they outscored Guelph 27-10, would ultimately prove to be too much of a deficit to overcome for the Gryphons, who dropped their season-opening matchup to the Badgers by a score of 64-47. All 12 players on the Gryphons roster would see floor time on Thursday night, with rookie guard Jack Tunstill (St. Thomas, ON) finishing the night with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 6 steals in his OUA debut. Tunstill was one of seven Gryphon rookies to make their OUA debuts on Thursday. Gryphons veteran guard, Shaaton Walker, was the only other Gryphon to score in double figures, with Walker chipping in with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. While the Gryphons were able to impress defensively, it was a rough shooting night for the Gryphons, who were held to 29.8% shooting as a team from the floor (17-57) while going 1-19 from beyond the arc. The Gryphons (0-1) will now return home for a Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26) matchup with the reigning OUA champions in the Queen's Gaels. Game time at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre is set for 3pm with tickets available online (gryphons.ca/tickets) with the game streamed live online at www.oua.tv.
