MBB RECAP: Gryphons Capture Convincing 104-83 Win Over Windsor Saturday Night

GUELPH, Ont. - Saturday night (Jan. 6) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre the U of G men's basketball team captured their first win of the new year after defeating the visiting Windsor Lancers 104-83 in a high-octane affair. The Gryphons improve to 4-8 on the season and solidify their position as the 4-seed in the OUA West while the Lancers fall to 2-8 and sit just behind the Gryphons in the division standings.

The Gryphons came into Saturday night's match looking to bounce back after suffering a hard-fought loss to the U of T Varsity Blues Thursday night in Toronto to kick off the secon half of the regular season schedule. Saturday proved to be a very different story with the Gryphons building a 19-point advantage at the half. Despite their lead the Lancers fought back in the third, cutting the Gryphon lead to 10 to start the final frame before the U of G squad went on a 34-23 scoring run to close out the game.

The win saw five different Gryphon student-athletes surpass the 10-point mark with veteran forward Viktoras Nausedas leading the bunch with a game-high 22 points. The Mississauga native also added 10 rebounds to complete the double-double in addition to a pair of assists and blocks. Teammate Emmanuel Ansah also recorded a double-double, his fourth of the season, with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Dylan McFee (18 pts), Dezayne Mingo (15 pts), and Carl Veltmann (12 pts) rounded out the Gryphon double-digit scorers.

The Gryphons will return to the court at the GGAC next weekend for a pair of matches. Friday night (Jan. 12) the Gryphons will take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves (4-8) before hosting the Brock badgers (5-6) Saturday evening (Jan. 13). Tickets for both games are available at gryphons.ca/tickets with the game also available for viewing live online at oua.tv.
