WBB RECAP: Gryphons Capture Divisional Win Over Mustangs Wednesday Night in London

LONDON, Ont. - On Wednesday night (Jan. 31) in London, a strong 4th quarter led the Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team to a 77-71 road win over the Western Mustangs. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 12-5 on the season and take sole possession of first-place in the OUA West, while the Mustangs fall to 10-8. The Gryphons have now won seven of their last eight league games and are currently riding a three-game win streak.

After trailing at the end of the opening quarter the Gryphons responded by forcing 8 turnovers in the 2nd quarter, helping the Gryphons take a one-point lead into the locker room at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, both the Gryphons and Mustangs tightened things up on defence which led to just five field goals from each team.  But it was the Gryphons who were able to find offensive rhythm late, with the visitors shooting an impressive 10-for-16 from the field in the 4th quarter to outscore the Mustangs 23-17 and earn a hard-fought 77-71 road win. Keryl Ousey at WesternFor the Gryphons, the evening was led by third-year guard Julia Colavecchia who finished the game one point shy of her season-high of 22. The Niagara Falls native went 9-for-15 including three shots from beyond the arc on her way to a 21-point outing, bringing her season total to just a few points shy of 200. Also reaching the 10-point mark was Alexis Wright and Renee Armstrong, who recorded 14 and 13, respectively. For Armstrong her performance in London also marked the second double-double of her career, totaling 11 boards in 36 minutes of action.

The Gryphons (12-5) will now look to take one step closer to securing top spot in the OUA West when they take on the Windsor Lancers (9-7) on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 4) in Windsor. If the Gryphons are able to maintain their division lead, they would earn a bye through to the quarterfinal round of the 2024 OUA playoffs, with the three division winners and the next best team all receiving preliminary round byes. The Gryphons Sunday game in Windsor tips off at 2pm and can be seen live online at oua.tv.
