GUELPH, Ont. - Saturday night (Jan. 20) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the U of G men's basketball team suffered an 80-76 loss to the TMU Bold, falling to 5-11 on the season. Despite some strong individual performances, the Gryphosn were unable to overcome a 38% three-point shooting night from the TMU Bold, who improve to 8-6 on the season.
After leading by three at halftime the Gryphons went 5-for-14 from the field and 1-for-8 from beyond the arc while the Bold shot 56% and took a three-point advantage heading into the final frame. Despite the Bold shooting 46% in the fourth, the Gryphons were able to cut the visiting team's lead to a single point with 30 seconds remaining. Being forced to foul with less than possession worth of time remaining, the Bold converted two frees throws on back-to-back trips to the line. A Gryphon turnover on the ensuing possession would all but end the game, with the Bold heading back to Toronto with the win.
Despite the loss a pair of Gryphons reached the 20-point mark, with
Dezayne Mingo totaling 29 and
Emmanuel Ansah recording 21. Mingo, the reigning OUA rookie of the year, would add 6 rebounds, and 4 steals in the loss. Ansah meanwhile recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds in addition to his 4 assists, 3 steals, and a pair of blocks. Veteran forward
Viktoras Nausedas also had a strong night, totaling 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
The Gryphons (5-11) will now head to their week off before getting ready to take on the Western Mustangs in London on January 31, 2024.
