MHKY RECAP: Gryphons Shutout by Lakehead, 2-0, Friday Night at Gryphon Centre

GUELPH, Ont. - Less than 24 hours after hoisting the Frosty Mug with a 5-1 win over Lakehead in the 2024 edition of the University of Guelph's signature men's hockey event, the Gryphons were right back on the ice on Friday night (Jan. 19), as they played host to the Lakehead Thunderwolves for a second straight evening. This time around, it was the visitor's from Thunder Bay who were able to secure the win, with Lakehead skating to a 2-0 victory over Guelph at the Gryphon Centre on Friday. Thunderwolves forward, Joe Mack, opened the scoring just :30 seconds into the opening period of play, with that proving to be the lone goal of the game for the next 40-plus minutes of action, until Tyler Ho's 3rd period goal extended the Lakehead lead to 2-0. Despite outshooting the Thunderwolves 27-22 on the night, the Gryphons were unable to solve Lakehead goalie, Max Wright, who was back in between the pipes for Lakehead for a second straight night after allowing five goals in the Frosty Mug the previous night. Colton Incze made his second start of the season for the Gryphons and made 20 saves on 22 shots in the losing effort.

With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 11-13-0 on the season, with just four games remaining in their regular season schedule, the next three of which will come on the road, beginning with a trip to Windsor next Friday (Jan. 26) to face yet another team in the OUA West with whom they are battling for playoff positioning with in the Windsor Lancers.
