GUELPH, Ont. - Saturday night (Jan. 13) the Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team dropped a tightly-contested home matchup with the Brock Badgers 63-58. With the loss the Gryphons fall to 9-5 on the season while the Badgers improve to 9-4.
The Gryphon offensive effort was led All-Star talent
Renee Armstrong who recorded a team high 15 points while adding 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Armstrong was one of two Gryphons to earn a double-double Saturday night, with forward
Trinity Papamandjaris recording her third of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Second-year guard
Alexis Wright also surpassed the 10-point mark, totaling 14 for her sixth double-digit point total of the 2023-24 campaign.
After a slow start to the first quarter that saw the Badgers take an early lead, the Gryphons responded well in the second frame, cutting the Brock lead to just two heading into the half. In the third, the Gryphons had their strongest quarter of the evening, outscoring the visiting team 17-11 before taking an 8-point lead tto open the fourth quarter. Despite their lead, a strong three-point shooting period from the Badgers would see the Gryphon lead disappear with just under three minutes remaining. Brock would then go on a 7-2 scoring run to close out the game and secure the win.
The Gryphons (9-5) will return to action in just a few days time when they head to Hamilton Wednesday evening (Jan. 17) for a matchup with the McMaster Marauders (7-6). The team will then return to the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre Saturday (Jan. 20) for a 6pm showdown with the OUA Central-leading TMU Bold.
