WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Defeat the Badgers 5-0 to Earn 15th Win of the Season

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team captured the 15th win of their 2023-24 season on Thursday night (Jan. 11) with a convincing 5-0 victory over the Brock Badgers. Katherine Heard scored twice for the Gryphons and Hannah Tait picked up three assists in the win which extends the U of G lead over the OUA West division to 16 points. The Gryphons improve to 15-1-2 while the Badgers fall to 6-8-3. The victory also marked the seventh consecutive win for the Gryphons, with their last loss coming November 17.

The Gryphons top line of Hannah Tait, Jaime Magoffin, and Tori Verbeek was clicking early again at the Gryphon Centre, breaking the stalemate just under 12 minutes when Verbeek chipped a lose puck over the shoulder of Brock goaltender Kenzie Harmison. Both Tait and Magoffin picked up assists on the goal, bringing the top line's production to 45 combined points this season. With the first period winding down Katherine Heard netted the third goal of her season before adding the fourth just a minute later to open the second.

Midway through the second, Gryphon forward Tiana Faccio would find the rebound from a Vanessa Bueti shot to make it a four goal game. 12 minutes into the third Meaghan Chittick closed out the scoring with a fantastic point shot through traffic to bring the Gryphon goal total to five on the night.

Third-year goaltender Martina Fedel was sensational once again for the Gryphons despite a slower than usual game. Fedel faced just nine shots from the BAdgers but turned each one aside, earning the 5th shutout her season and 17th of her Gryphon career. The goaltender from Trento, Italy is putting together an outstanding season in 2023-24, and currently leads the OUA in goals against average (0.97) and save percentage (.954).

The Gryphons (15-1-3) will return to action Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13) when they welcome the TMU Bold (3-12-2) to the Gryphon Centre. Puck drop is set for 2:30pm with tickets available at gryphons.ca/tickets.
