LONDON, Ont. - Sunday night at Mustangs Field in London the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team took on the Western Mustangs in their 2023 regular season opener. An early second half Mustang score proved to be all that was needed, as Western defeated the Gryphons by a score of 1-0.
The first half saw the Gryphons spend a significant amount of time in their own end, with the Mustags recording 6 shots to Guelph's 1 prior to the 20-minute mark. Despite the number of shots from both teams, the first 45 minutes came to an end with both teams unable to find their first goal of the season. The second half opened with the home team receiving several scoring chances, including five corner kicks and a pair of shots before they finally broke through and took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute. The remainder of the game saw few scoring chances and a tightly contested comeback attempt from the Gryphons. Unable to find the equalizer the Gryphons ultimately fell 1-0.
The Gryphons will return home next weekend (Sunday, September 10) for their home opener where they will host the Mustangs and look to get into the win column for the first time of the 2023 season. The match is set to get underway at 1pm at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, with the men's game against Western set to follow at 3:15pm.
