LONDON, Ont. - On the evening of Labour Day Monday the Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team made the trip to London, Ontario for their season opener against the Western Mustangs. In a match where the Gryphons found themselves playing from behind early, they were unable to overcome the deficit and ultimately fell in their first game of the season 2-1.
It was a match that quickly saw the Gryphons on their back foot, with the Mustangs receiving a trio of scoring chances in the form of corner kicks in the opening 25 minutes. Five minutes later the home team would break the tie, giving the Mustangs an early lead. Just five minutes later they would double their lead after Mustang striker Charlie Bontis netted his second of the match. The first half came to a close with the Gryphons struggling to generate offence and having no shots on net. The second half saw the team put some pressure on the Mustangs, getting seven shots. The Gryphons will return to action on Sunday, September 10 when they host the Mustangs in their 2023 home opener. The match is set to get underway at 3:15pm following the conclusion of the women's match.
