GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team hosted the Windsor Lancers on Friday afternoon (Sept. 29), needing a win to tie the Lancers in the OUA West Division standings. Thanks to a pair of timely goals, the Gryphons were able to leave the pitch with the a 2-1 win and now find themselves tied for 4th place.
After giving up the opening score of the game 20 minutes into the first half, it was rookie midfielder
Olivia Stavropoulos who scored her second of the season to tied the game at one apiece in the opening minutes of the second half. Over the next 40 minutes both teams traded opportunities but neither team wanted to surrender the next score. With time running down and a draw seeming like the likely end to the match,
Christina Gomes sent a shot at the Lancer net and past the Windsor goaltender to give the Gryphons their first lead of the match with just 24 seconds remaining. The Gryphons were able to hold out through extra time and take their fourth consecutive win, with their last loss coming in the 2023-24 season-opener on September 4 in London.
The Gryphons will take on the Lancers again in just a couple days when they head to Windsor for an afternoon rematch on Sunday (Oct. 1). The match is set to kickoff at 1pm at Alumni Stadium in Windsor and can be seen live online at
