MSCR RECAP: Gryphons Cruise to 5-1 Win to Sweep Warriors in Season Series

GUELPH, Ont. - On the afternoon of Sunday September 17th the Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team made a statement against the Waterloo Warriors. In a match where the Gryphons found themselves having early success in the opening exchanges, they were able to maintain this momentum leading to a dominant 5-1 home victory.

It was a match that saw the Gryphons on their front foot pushing the pressure, with effective passing and patience while attacking. In the opening 20 minutes second-year Comox, British Columbia native, Ambrose Tinmouth scored beautiful layoff goals. Following the second U of G score, the Warriors picked up the pace, making the next 25 minutes a back and forth competition with the visiting team managing to break through with a goal from Mattheus Mello making it 2-1. The Gryphons would capitalize on their opportunities inside the box late in the half, when Parmpreet Johal would score the third goal in the 44th minute off of a free kick. The first half came to a close Guelph dominating the action by generating more effective offence and consistent defence. The second half saw the team pull away from the Warriors with another pair of goals, this time with Gray Yates and Osayukie Ibie getting on the scoresheet. For the trio of Johal, Yates, and Ibie, the Saturday scores were the first of their 2023 OUA soccer season while Tinmouth's pair makes 3 on the campaign. The Gryphons secured the victory by maintaining a strong defensive plan and disabling any threats from the Waterloo offence to secure their second consecutive win over the Warriors.

The Gryphons (2-1-1) will return to action on Saturday, September 23 when they will be hosted by the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines at Brock Alumni Field. The match is set to get underway at 3:15pm following the conclusion of the women's match.
