GUELPH, Ont. -
Kaine Stevenson (offence),
Devynn Cromwell (defence), and
Gabriel Canabrava (special teams) have been named Gryphon Football "Players of the Game" following the team's 60-21 loss to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, September 9, 2023.
Kaine Stevenson (Offence)
Fourth-year receiver,
Kaine Stevenson, earns 'Offensive Player of the Game' after a strong performance in the Gryphons loss to the Golden Hawks in Week 3 of the 2023 OUA football season. The Windsor native hauled in a team-high six receptions on Saturday, going for 51 total yards. Despite the loss, the Gryphons offence showed flashes of brilliance, especially in the passing game. Stevenson's best play came on his very first catch, a 26-yard strike from quarterback
Tristan Aboud to pull the Gryphons away from their own endzone and close to midfield. The arts major picked up another reception on the drive, which would end the Gryphons first touchdown of the game. Stevenson is currently the third-leading receiver on the U of G football team, with 11 catches and 113 yards on the season.
Devynn Cromwell (Defence)
For the second consecutive week, cornerback
Devynn Cromwell is the Gryphons 'Defensive Player of the Game' after another game of leading the U of G secondary.

Cromwell took home the honour last week after picking up two tackles and a pair of deflected passes in a road loss to the Windsor Lancers. This week, the Toronto native continued his strong play in coverage despite the Gryphon passing game struggling as whole, picking up a pair of assisted tackles. Cromwell will look to continue his return to 2021-22 form when he was named a U SPORTS All-Canadian next week when the Gryphons head to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders. Cromwell missed last season's game against the Marauders due to injury, a game the Gryphons lost 27-22.
Gabriel Canabrava (Special Teams)
Rookie kicker
Gabriel Canabrava takes home Gryphon football 'Special Teams Player of the Game' honours in his first career start in OUA football. The 6-foot-2 economics major was perfect for the Gryphons on Saturday, making a pair of field goals in the first half from 22 and 28 yards out to earn his first career points.

The Toronto native also went 1-for-1 kicking PATs. Canabrava, who joined the Gryphons out of Clarkson Football North, also impressed on kickoffs where he averaged 62.7 yards per kick on three attempts. With some healthy competition for the Gryphons in the kicking game, Canabrava has made his case for the starting job with a strong debut performance against Laurier.
The Gryphons (1-2) take on the McMaster Marauders (1-2) next weekend (Saturday, Sept. 16) in Hamilton in a game that is sure to have major playoff implications on the line for both teams. Kickoff is set for 1pm at Ron Joyce Stadium.
