GUELPH, Ont. – With just five games remaining in the 2022-23 regular season the Gryphons Men's Volleyball team took the court at the Gryphon Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon looking to take control of the 8
th seed in the OUA standings. Taking on the York Lions, the Gryphons would take sole-possession of the final playoff spot with a win. However, the 3
rd-seeded York Lions would narrowly edge out the Gryphons in a pair of sets before taking a 3-0 (25-21, 30-28, 25-17) victory.
The Gryphons and Lions opened their Saturday match exchanging scores, with neither team able to get an edge on the other.

Late in the set the Lions built a four-point lead that the Gryphons were unable to overcome, giving York a 1-0 set lead. After claiming the first set the Lions came out strong in the second, jumping out to an 11-6 lead. After trailing for the net few possessions, the Gryphons launched their comeback attempt, outscoring York to force a 25-25 tie. The U of G men's volleyball team would fight off three consecutive Lions match-points before falling 30-28. The third, and ultimately final set, saw the visiting Lions start off with a 5-0 run and build and eight-point lead midway through the frame. The lead would be too much for the Gryphons and the York Lions would take the win 3-0.
The Gryphon attack was led by 5
th-year left-side hitter, and captain,
Arjun Selhi. The Mississauga native led the Gryphs with 10 kills and 10 total points in the loss. Selhi was followed by 2

Jacob Schweyer, who had 8 kills of his own and a block for 9 points. Finally,
Jacob Bailey had a game-high four blocks to go along with his 4 kills and a 0.429 hitting percentage.
The Gryphons (8-9) will look to bounce back against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Feb. 11) next weekend in Waterloo. With just three games remaining the Gryphons will need every point as they fight for the OUA's final playoff spot. The match versus the Warriors can be expected to be a tough one as Waterloo sits just four points behind the Gryphons in the OUA standings with two games in hand. The match can be seen live online at
