The series will also be a matchup of two U SPORTS Top 10 teams with the Gryphons ranked No. 10 in the most recent edition of the rankings and the Varsity Blues ranked No. 2 in U SPORTS. The Gryphons earned a spot in the semifinal round by way of a 2-1 series win over the Windsor Lancers in the opening round of the playoffs. Gryphons vs YorkAfter suffering a heartbreaking Game 1 loss to the Lancers in double overtime, the U of G women's hockey team responded with an impressive 3-0 shutout win in Game 2 in Windsor on Saturday (Feb. 25). The very next day, the Gryphons and Lancers played the second longest game in U of G women's hockey history, which ended in a quadruple overtime win for the Gryphons over the Lancers. In the marathon elimination game, Gryphon captain Hannah Tait scored in the 135th minute of on-ice action, on Guelph's 73rd shot on net, to punch the Gryphons ticket to the next round.

The Varsity Blues meanwhile experienced a much different quarterfinal series, defeating the Toronto Metropolitan Bold in two games. Game 1 saw the Varsity Blues find themselves down early with a 1st period TMU score. After playing nearly 40 minutes of hockey trailing the Bold, U of T would tie it up early in the 3rd period. With the teams tied 1-1 in the final minute of regulation the nations No. 2-ranked team would avoid overtime, scoring with just :15 seconds left to take a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 saw the two teams locked in a 2-2 stalemate to start the 3rd period before a pair of goals in the final six minutes secured the opening round sweep for the Varsity Blues.
