GUELPH, Ont. - On Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre the U of G women's volleyball team played host to the Royal Military College in the first game of a back-to-back against the Paladins. The Gryphons came into Friday's game looking to end the 2022-23 season on a high note, after being mathematically eliminated from the OUA playoffs. With a pair of wins the Gryphons could end the campaign on a four-game win streak, their longest of the season. They came one game closer to doing so, with a straight set win (25-19, 25-19, 25-16).
In the opening set the Gryphons and Paladins played a closely contested match before midway through the frame the Gryphons took a 18-16 lead. From then on the U of G women were in firm control of the game, going on a 7-2 run to close out the set. The second set saw the Gryphons take an early 14-7 point lead before letting the Paladins back in the game. RMC would tie the game at 15 apiece and appear to control the momentum. Despite the appearance the Gryphs regained the momentum after a timeout and followed with a 10-4 run to take a 2-0 lead. In the final set, Guelph made sure to maintain control of the momentum and leave the court with a 3-0 win. They would not trail the Paladins once in the 3rd and take a 25-16 final set victory.
The Gryphon offensive effort was led by 3rd-year middle blocker
Samantha Ingleton. The Orillia native scored a game-high 13 points on 19 attacks. On defense the U of G women were headed by first-year Gryphon
Hailey Holland who finishes with 2 solo blocks to go along with her 3 kills. Finally, veteran setter
Ella Carter led the Gryphons in kill assists, totaling 21 helpers to pair with her 6 points scored.
The Gryphons (6-13) will look to close out the 2022-23 OUA season with a win tomorrow night when they take on the Paladins again at the Gryphons Athletics Centre. Tickets for the game can be purchased at
