GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team played host to the York Lions on Saturday night (Feb. 11) in their second-last home game of the 2022-23 regular season. The Gryphons came into Saturday's matchup with the Lions coming off a shutout win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and looking to continue their impressive play as they head towards the OUA playoffs. A pair of powerplay goals and a trio of late third period goals would give the Gryphons a dominant 6-1 win over the Lions.
After a scoreless first period where the only action was a York Lions powerplay that was killed off by the OUA's 3rd best penalty kill (91%) the York Lions would open the scoring in the 2nd. Just over four and a half minutes in the Lions would score the games first goal on perfect shot that got past goaltender
Martina Fedel. The OUA's leader in shutouts, Fedel would respond by completely closing the door, stopping every shot faced for the remainder of the game. The Gryphons would also respond well, with
Meaghan Chittick scoring on the powerplay four minutes later to tie the game. With just 0.1 seconds left in the period the Gryphon powerplay would strike again, this time
Hannah Tait would the one to find the back of the net.
The third period saw the Gryphon offense take over.
Vanessa Bueti would make it a two-goal game just over six minutes into the period after out skating a Lion defender to a loose puck and beating the York goaltender glove-side for her 2nd of the season. With just over three minutes left in regulation the Lions pulled their goaltender and
Maya Graham took advantage, netting her 6th of the campaign. Despite the York goalie returning to the net the Gryphons would score a pair of goals in the final minutes with both
Rylee Davison and
Katherine Heard finding the back of the net to secure the 6-1 Gryphon win.
The Gryphons will return to the ice at the Gryphon Centre on Wednesday for the annual 'She's Got Game' game. They will take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in their final regular season home game with the puck scheduled to be dropped at 7:30pm. Tickets for the game are available at
