GUELPH, Ont. – Thanks to a dominant second half performance, the Guelph Gryphons men's rugby team now sit just one win away from a three-peat as OUA champions. The Gryphons won 47-26 over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night at the University of Guelph's Varsity Field in an OUA semifinal showdown. The Gryphons exploded for 35 points in the second half of play, taking control of a game that was tied 12-12 at halftime. The matchup with Laurier was a re-match of last year's OUA title game, which Guelph won 28-19 to secure the fifth OUA title in program history.
Six different Gryphon players recorded tries in the match, including two from
Jacob Ince, with Guelph starting off the second half with tries in the 48th, 55th and 62nd minutes of play to turn a 12-12 game into a 33-12 Guelph lead. Another try from
Tomas Dallan in the 69th minute would extend the Guelph lead to 40-12, with Dallan also connecting on six converts on the day, to give the two-time defending OUA champions a convincing win on their home field. The Gryphons now sit one win away from a sixth OUA title in program history, and third in a row, and await the winner of Saturday's OUA semifinal matchup with Queen's at Brock.
