WHKY RECAP: Golden Hawks Edge No. 4-ranked Gryphons in OT

GUELPH, Ont. – In a matchup of the top two teams in the OUA West Division, it was the visiting Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team escaping Guelph with a 1-0 overtime win on Friday night (Nov. 17) at the Gryphon Centre Arena. After a scoreless 60 minutes, the Golden Hawks would score the game's only goal, taking advantage of a power play opportunity in the overtime period. During the 3-on-3 extra frame, Guelph found themselves shorthanded after fourth-year forward Maya Graham was given a 2-minute minor, and 10-minute misconduct, for checking from behind. On the ensuing power play opportunity, Laurier was finally able to solve Gryphon netminder Martina Fedel, as 26th Laurier shot of the night was jammed home from in tight by Olivia MacMillan to give the Golden Hawks the 1-0 victory.

With the win, Laurier improves to 8-3-0 on the season, while the Gryphons fall to 8-1-2 (wins-losses-OTL/SOL). Despite the loss, the Gryphons still remain three points clear of Laurier for top spot in the division, with Guelph sitting on 24 points followed by Laurier with 21 points. The two teams will square off once again in six days, with the home-and-home series shifting to Waterloo with Laurier set to host the Gryphons on Thursday, November 23. It will be an early 11am puck drop on Nov. 23 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, with the Golden Hawks set to welcome local elementary students as part of their 'School Day' game.
