WSCR RECAP: Gryphons Beat Brock 4-1, Advance to OUA Quarterfinals

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team opened up the 2023 OUA playoffs in style. On Wednesday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Gryphons scored three goals within the opening half hour of play against the Brock Badgers and never looked back, with Guelph keeping their 2023 season alive with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Badgers in the OUA's preliminary round of playoffs. With the win, the Gryphons now advance to the OUA quarterfinals, and will hit the road to make the short trip down Highway 6 on Saturday (October 28) for a 1pm matchup with the McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton.

The Gryphons entered the 2023 OUA women's soccer playoffs as the No. 3-seed in the OUA West, after a strong regular season campaign that saw the Gryphons post a record of 8-2-2. Olivia Rizakos vs Brock - playoffsThe Brock Badgers, meanwhile, grabbed the final playoff spot in the OUA West as the No. 6-seed in the division after a posting a regular season record of 3-5-4 (wins-losses-draws). With Wednesday night's playoff matchup at the Gryphon Soccer Complex presenting both teams with a win-or-go-home scenario, the host Gryphons were able to get off to a sensational start, with Christina Gomes setting up Olivia Rizakos for the opening goal of the match in just the 7th minute of play. It was the first of two goals on the night for Rizakos, who would score again in the 28th minute to extend the Guelph lead to 3-0. Olivia Brown (16th minute) and Tessa Ladhani (90th minute) also put their names on the score sheet, as the Gryphons were able to come out on top versus Brock for the second time this season, after having also earned a 2-0 win during their lone meeting in the regular season back on September 23 in St. Catharines. The No. 3-seeded Gryphons will now head to Hamilton to face the No. 2-seed in the OUA West in the McMaster Marauders. The Gryphons and Marauders both posted identical 8-2-2 records durin the regular season to sit tied at 26 points (with McMaster earning the No. 2-seed by way of OUA tiebreaking regulations). The Gryphons and Marauders met once during the regular season, with McMaster picking up a 4-0 win over the Gryphons back on October 7 in Hamilton. Saturday's OUA quarterfinal game in Hamilton can be seen live online at www.oua.tv.
